Not really what I expected from Maggie Steifvater’s first foray into adult (I thought it’d be slightly more magical, I guess?) but really interesting all the same. The POVs were cleverly organized, the story itself was sort of slice-of-life at times, even though there was a clear starting and ending point. A very micro POV of WWII, but not one I ever really considered in depth. I think the sophistication of Maggie’s writing shines a bit more for this age category and I’m curious to see what she’ll write next.

DNFing at page 128 - I’m just not excited to keep reading it sadly. Maybe I’ll go back to it!

really wanted to like this, but it was not for me. maggie has great writing but i was so uninterested in the story. everything was so slow and i didn’t like any of the characters. i felt like nothing happened until the last 10% and even that wasn’t too exciting. i really didn’t like the romance (either options); it just seemed so random to me. i was mostly interested in the magic and there wasn’t even that much of it. it feels evil to rate it like this with my love of maggie’s other books but i just keep thinking how i should have dnfed.
