This rating wouldn've been lower if not for the epilogue and author's note. Most of this books was no plot just vibes except the vibes were.. just not it. I can appreciate the author's intent in writing this book, I just think that considering her inspirations, it could've been done so much better.

this to me is one of those quiet novels; a silence suffused with something heavy and tragic, a silence punctuated only by the whooshing of the minari in the winds and the occasional murmur. i enjoyed the atmospheric writing and the concept of san as a character: doomed to repeatedly find herself sabotaging her own situation, the hollow winds of loneliness thrumming just under her chest.

"where the minari grows, this scene i kept only to myself, her dry lips, a soft joy, the deep green spot, i will love you more than myself—these are where the letters blur."

It took me several tries to get into this book, but once I got into it the writing was captivating, and the theme of lonelines was woven heart-achingly throughout. That being said I didn't enjoy reading this book. I kept reading in spite of myself. I kept noticing the foreshadowing but didn't want to believe it, and then was ultimately taken by surprise. Violet-violent-violator. She was only 23. So was I.

I can't help but feel like this book was drawn from the actual experiences of the author. For her sake I really hope not. It felt too real.

"In her heart, whenever she returns home late at night, there's always the hope that when she looks up from the street,  someone will have turned the lights on for her.  That has never once come to pass." (Chapter: Memories of an Old Shirt)

"She pokes softly at an inner loneliness trembling within her as she presses the fountain pen to a blank page and copies word for word. " (Chapter: Memories of an Old Shirt)

"It's harder than you think to ruin your life." (Chapter: Su-ae)

This book made me cry my heart out, and I can't fully comprehend why.
