After seeing a review get clowned on over on tumblr, I realised I hadn’t written my own and had to come over to balance the scales.
This book is a classic for a reason. I read this as a metaphor for suddenly becoming disabled (physically or mentally), the subsequent guilt at needing to overly depend on people, and the dehumanisation and resentment that can follow from your providers. It’s so poignant to me that Gregor, upon turning into a bug, first worries about how it will impact his ability to work. He does not want to be a burden. But the empathy he has for the rest of his family doesn’t matter. They still find him disgusting for something out of his control, and ultimately kill him for it.
