Not simply a surreal parable, but a quiet indictment of a world in which the value of a human being is measured solely by their utility. Kafka’s vision is haunting not because Gregor becomes an insect, but because no one really mourns the man he once was : they merely grieve the inconvenience he has become.
The story reveals, with chilling restraint, the cruelty of a family and a society structured around productivity, appearance, and control. Gregor’s transformation is physical, but the real horror lies in the emotional and social metamorphoses it provokes: love becomes duty, care becomes resentment, and a home becomes a cage. Kafka holds up a mirror not to the monstrous, but to the everyday systems and affections that collapse the moment someone stops being useful , this is not a tale of fantasy, but of quiet dehumanization : one that continues to resonate in any world where empathy ends where profit begins.
