Great depth of story for an early reader (trigger warning on Mindy's deceased mom - who passed away after extended illness prior to this series' origin). My daughter is obsessed with Mindy's campaigns to get a dog, good friends, and fantastic vacations. We have re-read these on the regular for the last month - great series.

The best so far of the series IMHO but I probably won't get past 3 stars. It was a breezy journey to S Korea to introduce jobumo/ grandparents as well as whet appetites with the most popular cuisine. Really loved that her grandparents gave her advice at the end...cute. Nice nod to the light blue airline jet, lmao!!

Mindy Kim becomes a 9yr blogger who doesn't blog??? Are we just introducing new concepts for the heck of it? I wish Mindy Kim used her appa's tablet to learn Korean history or speak with her relatives vs posting pictures. Personally, I would have busted out my Google Translate app as I really did in Seoul to see instant translations - that's what we do nowadays kids. Be a good visitor is my advice!

As an adult, I find it hard to keep skirting around the 'mom is dead' issue - it's the elephant in every story - so why keeping put it down on the page if Mindy Kim doesn't even seem to notice herself. The grandparents making the toast to the dead mom (who has only been dead for a year or so)....too bizarre if you know Korean culture...also, we learn that Mindy's mother was born in S Korea sooooo no visit to mom's family to pay respects...ooops, another story for another book...

I'm missing the point somehow...I need cliff note instructions

I loved this! I loved the trip to Korea and all that we learned along with Mindy. It made me so hungry! I really enjoyed this, but wish we got to see a little more of the places she went to visit over those two weeks. It went by so fast!

This is one of the strongest installments in the Mindy Kim series, in my opinion. I enjoyed the short, well-plotted, and satisfying story about her visiting her relatives in Korea, exploring her heritage, and building deeper relationships. The book is also realistic about some of the challenges involved with international travel, instead of presenting it in an idealistic way. This book will appeal to people who are following the series, and also works as a stand-alone for readers who are interested in the travel premise.
