I read this because I see it referred to so often. I can see why. Parts are still very applicable today.

This edition is simple to read with limited foot notes and visually beautiful. A good choice for the casual reader.

An og self help

“Know the enemy. Know yourself. Then the victory is never in doubt, never in a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

“Ultimate excellence lies not in winning every battle, but in defeating the enemy without ever fighting.”

“The best soldier is not warlike. The best fighter is never angry. The best conqueror takes part in no war. The best employer does not look down but up to his employees. This is the virtue of non-contesting. This is the secret of bringing out other men's ability.”

“War is not a matter of force and heroism but of ruse and humility.”

“In itself, water has no form. It is constantly conforming. It evolves through adaptation. It is because it always adapts that it always progresses. In the same way, it is only by adapting to the enemy’s situation that I can triumph. The enemy’s situation is for me what the lie of land is for water. I mold myself upon the enemy’s situation. I espouse him rather than thwarting him. I never stiffen into any form. Instead I conform. As a result, victory is irresistible, irreversible, like water in its course never going astray, always flowing downward without a moment’s hesitation.”

i'm in a war mood at the moment, don't know why. this book is referenced all over the place so i figured i'd give it a read. i don't like the concept of war so i wasn't engulfed, but could respect the well thought out tactics and philosophy of sun tzu. i'm also watching that hbo series, "band of brothers." what's going on with me right now?!

A book filled with sense and wisdom. There were some dry parts but overall, not a bad book! Glad I read it
