It is essential to remember when reading The Art of War that this fundamental treatise was composed in the 5th century BCE. The fact that over two millennia later we are still finding new wisdom in its teachings cries testament to its universality. What “Sun Tzu said” in simple yet profound axioms has proven a veritable treasure trove in the philosophy of leadership and conflict management.

Beyond the practicalities of conducting ancient warfare, the treatise is at its core a guide on how to interact with a dangerous world in a wise and tempered fashion. Sun Tzu’s practicality, however, is always tempered with a spiritual touch. He advocates a balanced, holistic approach to conflict, never failing to emphasize that “the greatest victory is that which requires no battle.”

The Art Of War certainly accomplishes what it sets out to do-- act as a brief general's handbook for combat strategy. One point for conciseness, one point for being an informative essay on a niche subject (though hardly comprehensive), and a quarter point for its slight relevance to forming a "plan of attack" on whatever the reader may be battling in modern life.

An interesting read. Go for it, without any second thoughts.

good read. I like Machiavelli's "The Prince" more than this.
