My reason for reading The Art of War was to get some knowledge on actual battle tactics as the sort of stories I write will feature a good number of battles. A rather unorthodox reason for reading this classic, I think, but I'm glad to say that I was not disappointed.
The book is not written in prose, but instead is a collection of bullet points. Sun Tzu talks about many things frankly, such as the considerable number of factors that a general has to keep in mind while formulating plans, the importance of spies, the use of fire in warfare, different types of terrain and what should a general do in each of them, how one should avoid long drawn-out campaigns and sieges at all costs and so on and so forth.
The book is very readable, my edition at the very least, and is very informative. For my purposes too it is of great help, and it, second only to All Quiet on the Western Front, will have the biggest influence on how I write warfare in my stories.
Overall, a good read for those interested in a good and easily digestible introduction to tactics.

Great and quick read about the ancient art of Chinese war tactics.
I found it quite fascinating and it was a good way to get my brain active!

This version is practically copy-paste. Explanations on each prose weren't provided.
It's a classic, I know. But I didn't find it very enjoyable. The fact that every chapter starts with "Sun Tzu says" surely didn't help. Like we get it, the guy wrote the manual, stop with the repetition already.
It's a short book, with each chapter focusing on a different aspect of warfare, and providing wisdom on strategy, tactics, and leadership. The main point is that using deception is what achieves victory.
Outside of select few fields, I think we've grown past this as humanity. I hope, at least. We should be aiming for collaboration, not war.
