Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke

I loved the writing style but reading a book centred almost entirely on the male characters, particularly the upper/upper-middle class male characters, was grating a little after a time. When we hit Portugal and Wellington I was out! Loved the writing and may come back to it, I'm just not in the mood at present. I wanted more of Lady P, Arabella, Stephen Black, all those people. And I may have got it if I'd held out. I'll see.

A slow but rewarding read. I tried reading this on kindle, gave up, bought the paperback and loved it. Inventive but classic fairy tale, love story, historical fiction. So vivid and will be thinking about this for a long time.

Video Review Here!

I may just be high off the fumes of reading this but I think this may be my favourite fantasy novel now. JUST shy of a 5 star review. Had some issues with characterization in a few places, and though I understand that the meandering, meticulous pace had intent (and was certainly done a lot better than in all the other fantasy novels that attempt to do that), there were a couple hiccups. But the issues are relatively minor as I'd say this is a must-read fantasy novel. Better than LotR, ASoIaF, Dune, and Narnia by a country mile.
