This first volume is a solid four star read. A real page turner. Reading in one sitting is not a problem at all. The characters:
Light: a real poster boy for the human race. He is brilliant and attractive. Top of his class, with his entire future ahead of himself. AND DOES HE EVER TAKE A TURN.
The speed that Light accepts this darkness in himself and begins to feel it is his own righteous duty to judge and execute startled me a bit. I can kind of understand how he feels in the beginning with this newfound power and the criminals his dad deals with on the daily. BUT, then he just starts on anyone that could possibly be a threat to himself. Giving a purse snatcher the same ugly end as a murdering rapist. The Kira persona is taking him over. I'm not sure he is redeemable.
L: a mysterious mastermind, capable of solving any case. Never allowing anyone to see him or have any other significant contact. THIS GUY IS JUST AS BRILLIANT AND DETERMINED TO WIN as Light. He is confident that he is going to find "Kira" and bring him to justice for all these murders. When he finally comes out into the open with the police and we finally meet him, I was not at all surprised that he seemed to be the same age as Light. And also, in the looks department, his polar opposite. He has a much more dark appearance.
Ryuk: rogue death God and owner of the Deathnote. So far, I just find this guy amusing. He is very " chillax " about everything. He kind of gives me Beetlejuice/Surfer Dude vibes. Ridiculous. He does have a frightening appearance, but also it's kind of rock n roll. I guess if he were glaring at me I would feel differently.
There was a little bit of sexism. One of the male FBI agents gets grouchy about his female fiancé, and former fbi agent, having an idea about the case. He scoffs at her thoughts and reminds her that she is only his fiancé now and tells her that once she starts having babies, she'll be too busy to have these ideas. That was irritating.
Overall, I am enjoying the series and can't wait to see how much more involved L becomes.

Update July 16th, 2020
Manga Status: Completed
My Reading Status: Completed
Published English Volumes/Chapters Read: 12 Volumes - 108 Chapters
Chapters Read Overall: 108
Genre: Shonen
Current Overall Series Rating: 4.5/5
Thoughts: A really good series that I think most people have watched instead of read. The ending in the anime is slightly different than the manga, so I'd recommend reading so you can get the extra material. At the halfway point of the manga, the series does take a bit of a breather and almost becomes a little dull. It does pick up again after some chapters, but even rereading it still puts me in a weird slump in the same areas. Even with that said, this is still a great manga if you're looking for a more thought-provoking shonen. It may be an older title, but the art and story flow still hold up 14 years later since it's completion.
