Safe to say, I didn't see this coming. This was my first manga reading and I LOVED it. It has been a hot minute since I have read something so immersing that I almost couldn't handle the intensity. This was one of the most unpredictable and exciting texts I have ever read.
Pros: Reading this gave me similar feelings to watching a TV show. Which is a hard thing to do. Film gives us sound, lighting, camera angels etc to give us a full experience. Books have to rely on their writing alone which I feel makes it harder to control how a reader interprets the story. This is both a blessing and a curse. Albeit, a manga does have images, it is the plot and writing of this story that makes it so amazing.
I actually cannot get over how gripping the plot is without being over dramatic or unbelievable. It has a subtle intensity to it. I read it in two sittings even though I was trying to pace myself because I didn't want to finish it too soon. Thank god it is a series because I couldn't put it down.
It is hard to put into words why this is so brilliant. I think it comes down to the perfect balance of plot, characters and writing style. The characters are interesting and there is no clear villain or hero. I also love how these characters are so intelligent. It has similar vibes to a crime book/film where the characters are always thinking of every possibility. This also makes the story unpredictable and exciting! The plot is fast paced without feeling rushed. The writing style is succinct, humorous and engaging. With so little words it is amazing how they could form connections and understanding between reader and characters.
Cons: I have no cons for this. There was maybe one scene that seemed a little sexist to me which slightly bothered me but it was more to show a particular kind of character rather than the text having sexist connotations. But I'm nit picking because I really cannot fault this.
Overall, I never thought I would read a manga series. Yet here I am, exploring other texts and being presently surprised. I cannot wait to continue in this series and I highly recommend it.

This is my favorite anime, and I’m enjoying relearning the story by reading the graphic novel. I’d forgotten lots of details so it’s fun! SUPER weird to read right to left but I got used to it by the end. Now to buy the rest of the series.

3/5 Stars.
This isn't really what I expected it to be. I thought it would be a story about a bullied teen who uses the death note for revenge, but ends up going further. A Carrie-esque story. What I got was a lot more mature.... and I almost prefer it the way I believed.
Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed this. I am not very into detective stories, though, and that is what half of this is. I also don't care for Light, and I can't tell if you are even supposed to like him. My favorite character is the fiance of the dead agent, so I am holding out for her going into volume 2.

This is so fun! I have always been a fan of deathnote, the anime is how I first consummed this series, but now finally reading the manga for the first time I can now say that I am obsessed once again. It's so good being back in this world, I loved every second of this!
