Poe's longest work: an interesting adventure story that reminded me of Jules Verne, but a lot more mature. You'll like it if you are familiar with Poe's work, although it is surprisingly less wordy than his shorter stories. There were a few parts that kept me at the edge of my seat, such as when the crew of the ship had to resort to cannibalism. You can see echoes of this in the Love Death and Robots episode Bad Traveling.

i actually really enjoyed the first third or so of the novel, but the abrupt style and tone shift caused me to loose interest. i will say that the abrupt ending was quite interesting

More like The Narrative of Arthur Boredom Pym. I did learn a lot about curing sea cucumbers, so I guess I have that going for me now.

This book is quite interesting. Interestingly grotesque, dated, and unfortunate.

Although, parts of the plot were thrilling and had me invested, there were many parts that dragged and several unnecessary tangents about the proper building of ships, many of which did not factor into the plot. I found a lot of this book pretty racist. The way Poe writes Non-White characters is pretty problematic and offensive, and suggests that people who aren’t White are ubiquitously and inherently violent and cruel.

Obviously has its issues, but overall a good story and a very interesting style
