I love Poe but damn this was racist

interessante em alguns momentos fazendo jus ao estilo de poe mas cansa numa prosa descritiva excessivamente exaustiva

This is a fascinating read. The concept of realism that is perpetuated through the whole novel is very well done and I have never come across it to this extent, although it makes me think of things that could have been influenced by this including Harry Potter. The ending also seems like a unique phenomenon; ending the book unfinished and chalking it up to the narrator not being able to continue his story. It certainly leaves the reader with many imaginative thoughts as to what could happen but perhaps to too great an extent. I plan on reading some of the continuations that have been done by famous authors.

My favourite part of the book in terms of writing is definitely when Pym is stuck in the hold at the very beginning of the story. The vocabulary and sentence structure are astounding at times:

"It is with extreme reluctance that I dwell upon the appalling scene which ensued; a scene which, with its minutest details, no afterevents have been able to efface in the slightest degree from my memory, and whose stern recollection will embitter every future moment of my existence."

I was expecting this excellence to continue throughout, and I would have given five stars if it had done so, however I felt the writing took a turn for the worse at the halfway to two thirds point. It may be this is a reflection of the plot of the story which becomes obviously prejudiced once the natives of the virgin island betray their ship; but I feel that leading up to this point as well I was not as impressed with the writing.

Maybe one day I will attempt a re-writing of the ending from the point of the meeting of Too-wit and his people up to a real conclusion to the story.

It felt like Poe got bored half way through, and Herman Melville saw to writing the rest. It was like reading those Moby Dick's chapters nobody cared about all over again.

I wasn't sure whether to give this 1 star or 5 so I took the average. This is one strange book, recommended for fans of Poe or of the bizarre and macabre. Don't expect much coherence-it's part travel adventure, part geographical treatise, part horror fantasy and just an odd little book indeed.

My favorite part was when they were starving & ate their friend - only to find out a a day later or so that they had forgotten about the axe that they needed in order to get to the food.

Then they ate a turtle.

They never talked about the friend again.

Good times with Poe!

This was wonderful; you can really see the roots of Moby Dick in this Poe adventure.

la historia no me gustó en absoluto, pero me encantó la forma en la que está escrito :)
