I hadn't read this since my teens (a VERY long time ago!) and was reminded while watching Mike Flanagan's excellent series The Fall of the House of Usher. Here Pym is played by a superbly curmudgeonly Mark Hamill and it's worth watching just for him.
This is Poe's only novel and although it was derided as being too grim when first published, it really is worth seeking out. While there are aspects that are clearly fantastical, a good deal of the early part of the book is based in truth, which perhaps makes it all the more horrific. It doesn't take much to see how it influenced Melville

Gruesome, racist, and an abrupt ending I still haven’t wrapped my head around.
After starting off incredibly strong, the book kind of decelerates to a point of silliness. Poe begins this novel with the hallmarks of the kind of strange, visceral horrors that he's well known for, and ends in a colonial treatise with an odd cliffhanger. The style keeps the story interesting throughout, even if the content largely doesn't.
I'm not even sure if I would call the story "good" or "bad," it's an interesting take on a form of struggle at sea which I generally love, but I wish Poe would've kept it there instead of making fantastical animals and hollow earths.

Stad ocena 3,25 ⭐️

read this for class and it made me wish i hadn’t picked 19th century literature
This was assigned in one of my English classes. As it goes with school sometimes, I didn't finish it. Also, it was just a bit rambly and once the ending was given away in class, I couldn't bring myself to both finishing it.

What made me excited about this story was how I could feel its influence over Lovecraft’s works and mostly I can tell why Jules Vernes would have loved this novel with its description of an Antarctic ecosystem and world unconquered by civilization. I can’t wait to read Vernes’ follow up book, Le Sphinx des glaces (An Antarctic Mystery).
