I'm always ecstatic when McEwan writes something new, but this seemed like it was written in a bit of a rush, with some awkward choices, I guess. Still very entertaining, and I devoured it.

Had me thinking and laughing.

A Kafka, Animal Farm and Brexit satire crossover sounds beyond promising; so why did I find this quite so tedious to read?

Sort of had this obnoxious attitude towards a certain section of the population, implying they were stupid, etc. I think this is part of what's wrong with politics in this country at the moment!

Despite that, it was well written, if not exactly subtle. My saved quote:

"There was nothing in the near-infinite compendium of EU rules and trade protocols of the customs union that prevented a member state from reversing the circulation of its finances. That did not quite represent permission. Or did it? It was a defining principle of an open society that everything was lawful until there was a law against it. Beyond Europe's eastern borders, in Russia, China and all the totalitarian states of the world, everything was illegal unless the state sanctioned it."

Imperfect, but it made me smile, and that is something, as regards our current Kafkaesque situation in UK politics.
