I truly wanted to like this book and I did not.  I expected it to be more like a greek or roman myth and feel a lot more fantasy heavy, but it was like a boring mystery that just so happened to occur in a fantasy world. I found it so boring and weirdly hard to read.  The only reason I did not DNF is because its for my book club.

Wow. I don't even know what to say about this novel that won't spoil the experience for anyone thinking of reading it, but I really enjoyed this. The descriptions of the world are fascinating, the main character is charming and his ways of thinking are described in a way that makes them make sense, and the plot took plenty of turns.

Narration by Chiwetel Ejiofor was AMAZING, I couldn't imagine experiencing this in any other way. Gorgeous

I picked this up by chance, and it was amazing, I read it so fast as I couldn’t put it down. Even in the beginning where I had no idea what was going on, it was not confusing or boring but instead intriguing and fantastical. The world building is so original and beautiful, I felt as though I was in The House, lost with the protagonist, and having his revelations with him. I recommended this book to anyone into fantasy or mystery genres. Even after reading and researching the inspirations behind ‘Piranesi’, I am still thinking about and wondering about this story, wanting more.

This book was not what I was expecting and I’m so glad I stuck with it. I definitely feel the need to re-read it again soon so I can better process the experience. Highly recommend!!

Piranesi is a wonderful story, told in a rather unique fashion. I’ve only read a couple books that use this same storytelling technique, but Piranesi does it so beautifully.

The beginning was slow, primarily because I had no idea what was going on half the time, but that may just be me. The specificity of the house made me want to create a map in my head, and that wouldn’t go well for anyone. The size is enough to make any map-maker quit, I have no idea how Susanna Clarke kept track of it all.

Where things took a turn is the middle/last third of the book. I had finally caught up with everything, and this is where the plot speeds up. Without this section, I think I’d still be here trying to decipher this book. After reading other reviews, I feel like this is a general consensus, that the book is beautiful, but it doesn’t pick up until the last third.

Highly recommend, if not for the beautiful story, for Susanna Clarke’s magnificent writing style alone.
