So, this is the the "beach" book. Lots of action, fast read, and a character that knows how to approach all situation. My dad and husband has gotten into these books, so I downloaded one from the library and was engrossed immmediately. Jack Reacher who is the regular for the entire series by Lee Child is a nomad with no bags and no strings. Reacher's mystery is what keeps the story compelling. I'll definitely read another, when I'm ready for a "gulp-it-down, don't taste" while reading book. Don't get me wrong, it was a fun ride!

Ok, so I bought this at the Borders that's going out of business near my house. I'm glad to say that I didn't spend that much on it!

And the only reason I picked it up was because I read somewhere, and I can't remember to this day, which website it was, but it said this made the top all time mysteries ever. So ever since then 61 hours has been stuck in my head a "to-read" book.

For the record, this is my first Lee Child's book and my first introduction to Jack Reacher.

It will most likely be my last.

When Child presented his story to us in a snowy and cold South Dakota, and the bus crashed, I was like ok, I'm confused, but I'll keep going. I just couldn't get used to style of writing, especially the first two or three chapters. I had to keep re-reading the paragraphs over and over again. I saw that it had promise and a good hook with the whole thing of the strange man boarding the bus and not speaking. It was eerily enticing, but after he said his name I was like..."who the hell is Jack Reacher??"

And every time the name Jack Reacher came on a page, I heard it in my mind with that eerie music from Law & Order, and then it whispered voice overed into my ears: Jack Reacher (dun-dun).

Later on, I realized that this is the fourteenth book of this particular series, and I apparently missed the bandwagon on this one. Or I guess you could say I was lucky about missing it.

This is going to sound like a horrible review, but I truly did NOT like this book and cannot fathom how it possibly got on that list! I knew the killer was Chief Thomas Holland like a quarter of the way through, I was so bored with the snow and how impossbly cold it was (could it get any colder as Jack kept saying), yeah we get it it's cold, you're in South Dakota in the middle of winter. Good deductive reasoning on that one. And besides Jack Reacher's character was completely flat to me!

All he did was act mysterious but not enough to want to read any further. The only reason I kept going was because I had this hope that it would pick up or get better, because it made that list!

Needless to say, I was sorely mistaken.

Janet was interesting, but maybe that's because I love books and wanted to be trapped in her house for days. Also, because this stubborn old lady who wanted to hold onto this principles and actually walk the walk, not just talk about it, had to go and get herself into this big old mess with bikers selling and making meth, and then some Spanish little dude, Plato, wanting to off her because she witnessed a drug deal exchange happen in the little town of Bolton, South Dakota. Now Janet was under all this protection and it didn't do any good. The whole over precautions with the police being everywhere, like how much more of an easy target can you make for the killer to come it? The house with all the police surrounding it. I feel bad for Petersons' wife and kids, how depressing. Andrew Peterson seemed to me like a good guy. This Susan girl over the phone, was just annoying. I hate how Child tried to throw in a possible love interest for Reacher. How cliche and totally not worth my time.

Plato, the bad guy of the book, was small in stature and in character. Everything came up short for him. I was not impressed by him. The Russian ended up "tripling" him, which I can only conclude to him that he got one overed. Whatever, he was duped to say the least. The duper became the dupee.

So much snow. I hated it.

Yes, the last chapter kept talking about the fire burning for like 7 days or something like that for them to investigate it, I don't know I started skimming it. And then to find out that we don't know what happened to this elusive character Jack Reacher.

Too much of nothing in this book. I'm sorry I recommended it to my friend, even before reading it myself, and now I will never do that again. Sorry Laura! And I'm sorry I spent money on this one. I would have glady returned it to the library.

This was not worth the hype, nor the money, nor the review for that matter, but here I am still pounding away at the keys.

Maybe Jack Reacher's character would've been better in the beginning of this series, but I just can't see it happening. Child wanted too much military training in it, but all the mystery and no explanation. And besides, we don't even really learn about Jack Reacher until about 3/4 of the way through. Child put it in as an afterthought for those readers who's never heard of him or Jack Reacher.

Counting down the hours and I was bored with it. So what?! 61 hours and people die and they're not really all that important. And now the main character...well we don't know if he's alive or dead or on the run again back to his nomad state. I'm assuming there's another installment of Jack Reacher, but I just don't care.

Horrible. Horrible. Horrible.

Totally gripping. His plotting and tension building are masterful.

classic!!!

I have never loved Jack Reacher so much in all his books than I did in this one

page turning summer read. I could NOT put the book down; readers finally learned about Reacher's history in the Army just a bit.
