The storytelling is very good, and the author has a clear knack for distinctive, believable voices. This was a fun read!
That said, I was left unimpressed, considering the hype. Nothing here is particularly unique or revolutionary about the structure or thematic interweaving of stories. Mitchell didn’t invent anything new or apply something in a novel way (no pun intended). I liked what he did, and generally wouldn’t have commented on the structure expect people seem to make such a big deal about it.

Ok apparently this was super popular like a decade ago and even made into an award winning movie but I just completely missed it! It was a pretty neat concept for a book – it follows 6 characters - basically starting with 1 character in a historical fiction narrative and then you meet a new character in each section as it moves forward in time, ending in more of a sci-fi story, and then it moves backwards through all the same characters and you learn how they are all connected. Most of the stories are great, but I found the last one (who resides in the middle of the book) hard to get through because it was written in very hard to understand accents, very “Huck Finn”esque – it was difficult to follow the plot because I had to concentrate so hard on what the heck was being said. But anyway, overall a neat book.
