5⭐️? This book is so underrated!!!! It started off kinda eh but I was honestly still immediately pulled in anyway. Got me out of a huge fantasy slump. Rating is based off of vibes and my excitement for the next book — is it a literary masterpiece? Far from it. Did I have sooo much fun? Yes!!!!!!

The writing in this book is...not great. The first third or so of this book progresses nearly entirely through dialogue. There are plot holes?  miscommunications? threadbare spots? Things that make you say "hmm that doesn't match the thing that was said 13 chapters ago." If this wasn't a book club pick I probably would not have continued.

However, after the first 30ish% I was hooked. I could not stop reading. The characters actually had depth. There were so many secrets that I wanted to strangle Blake so he would tell me. Bad things happened. This is not one of those books where there's always conveniently a solution to the problem. Which I honestly loved. The world is, of course, Gothic and terrible.

I am immediately going to start the second book.

I ate this up. This gave me Fourth Wing vibes. Sure there were some plot holes but I had a good time reading this.

I have read worse books in terms of both writing, plot, story and themes, but I have read fewer books that are less worth reading as a whole.

There is nothing here you can't predict from page one, and there is less than zero interest in anything but "plot" and "world building".

There is a little sex, and it's not terribly written at all, but it's also not enough to justify the rest of the book existing.

This story had potential but… unfortunately it read like it was written for wattpad
