So far the pattern of Sebastian's trilogies is that I like each successive one more than the previous. I liked these two leads together and the side plot with Julian's sister was entertaining. The epilogue was a bit twee, but I wouldn't be reading romance if I didn't like cheesey scenes.

This is a cute story with some interesting characters. I'm a sucker for "sex first, catch feelings later" which this one does nicely. I liked the secondary characters a lot but the leads were interesting as well. I thought the plot got kind of stale in the middle there and the ending went on a little too long. I also took off points because I really hate conflict that arrives only so long as the characters don't talk to each other about things they could just as easily solve with a simple conversation. Very "Bridgerton but make it gay" so there's that going for it. Overall I liked it I just didn't love it. So far no one is able to beat K.J. Charles for historical queer romance for me. Except, maybe, Olivia Waite...

3.5

I enjoyed this book! The characters were fun to follow and, by the halfway point, I was really rooting for them to get their HEA. I ended up giving it a 3.5 just because the writing wasn’t as strong as Sebastian’s other books, mainly with backstory reveals not feeling very natural and the miscommunication got more frustrating than fun at times. Still, I recommend this if you want a m/m historical fix! Reading The Lawrence Browne Affair is a must before reading this, though - it’s a spin-off and would feel awkward without that background.
