I picked this up in an independent bookstore in San Antonio, knowing I was going to Spain soon and wanting to know about both cultures. Cabañuelas is a Spanglish book that covered the differences between the author’s Chicano upbringing and the parties her family hosted vs festivals in Spain. The author talked a great deal about her lost love, interjecting a lot of personality into the story, which otherwise would have been straight information. However, I noticed almost a complete absence of any imagery. I wished to taste the food of Spain, feel the energy of the festivals, and hear the happiness wafting in the air. Cantú seemed to rely heavily on pictures to do this, which was such as a shame as I think that she has tons of writing potential.

This book also needed a good editor. There were too many interjections and fragments, some sentences not even ending with a period. On almost every page there was some sentence that had a “But.” Right after it. I get the attempt to be artsy but instead it made some paragraphs intelligible and choppy. I had to deduct a star for this style. Overall I think that Cabañuelas is informative and interesting, just lacking some key things I personally look for in a book.
