It was good but as far as strange twists that I've come to expect from Turton it fell flat. As a mystery it was good and hard to piece together

It was a pleasure to read… mostly. This book wasn’t something I could put down easily.

But some plot points were easy to predict many chapters before they became relevant. Additionally, several chapters in the middle of the book felt underwhelming, with little effort to expand upon the richly developed world introduced earlier (which I had initially loved the richness of, almost earning a 5 star review in the world building category based on the setup alone—but ultimately falling flat.) At times, it seemed as though the narrator was intentionally withholding information (not to build tension, but simply to preserve the next twist.) That may be a legitimate technique for writing surprises, but this book failed to convince me of its cleverness. On first read it felt contrived, maybe with a reread this book would be more enjoyable?

And the ending? Groan…

It was a compelling, character-driven thriller, and I can see why others might enjoy it. But for me, it just wasn’t my cup of tea.
