Even though this book leaves me with a deep melancholy every time I read it, I keep coming back. Even writing a 6000 word essay on it wasn’t enough thinking about it. It is an almost endlessly frustrating novel, from the gender and class politics to the structure. And yet it is relentlessly beautiful. There is something so hopeful and yet so depressing about the ending. The house will keep decaying, the Last family will keep getting poorer and yet they won’t ever stop hoping for restoration and renewal. Will add more thoughts on my inevitable next re-read.

Brenda was eerily similar to Undine from “The Custom of the Country”, as was Tony’s demise. Also that ending?? Forcing to read a man Dickens to your death is truly a poetic finish!
