I loved this book. It was funny, biting, and remarkably perceptive of human selfishness and decadence. The characters are outlandish yet believable. However, the ending, though great in its own right, felt as though it didn't belong with the rest of the story.

There’s an ending that you couldn’t imagine when you start reading this book…until page 270 when you realize that you’ve seen the movie. Ugh. Both are very good, but I prefer starting with the book.
I did not finish this book. I was over half way through, and quit. Nothing about this held my interest, blech.

This tale brought out a depressive sort of realism of high society in the early 1900s which was enthralling but also infuriating. I both liked and disliked all the characters as everyone was quite flawed and a deeper reading of class and gender relations could easily be completed. I must say though, while I thought the first ending was far better than the alternative, my love of having things work out made me prefer the alternate ending Waugh wrote for a serial.

Some parts made me laugh out loud from the scathing societal criticisms made by Waugh or the vile and shallow ways his characters conducted themselves. One part made my jaw literally drop and stay agape for three or more minutes as I processed the most cruel thing I’ve ever (EVER!!!!) heard. Some part I skimmed because I wasn’t totally into the adventure vibes. The ending was completely out of left field.
Truly entertaining. If you think you know what to expect from this book, no you don’t.

This is such a good book. If you want a really amazing analysis of English upper class, this is the book for you.
The ending completely catches you though. Really really odd ending.
