I'm on a run of reading really, really great books and "The Vanishing Half" was no exception. I went into this book really not knowing anything about it - I just liked the cover and found it second hand at a thrift store. I'm so glad I picked it up though. It's a historical fiction book that dives deep into the intersection of racial identity, prejudice, community and family. I found it so interesting to read about the lives of the two sisters and how they chose different paths for themselves. I got a little hesitant when the story veered off into the perspectives of their daughters but I was so so wrong - the POV of the next generation added so much more depth to the story and really showed how certain decisions can really impact so much. Would highly recommend.

i wasn’t going to give this book 5 stars but the more i read , the more impressed i was with the writing in this book. towards the end the reflections on death were just beautiful. also the storytelling and narrative throughout carried so well, it was truly a beautiful book. the author has such a good way to show love through words. amazing

Well that was entertaining. Telling this story through twins was a good choice. The ending, as well as the whole story, is realistic.

i just had way too high of expectations. maybe i'll like it more with a reread. I'm going to confine myself to only reading shitty but entertaining books to get myself out of this slump
