This is an incredible book! I can’t believe it even exist! It’s the true story of an early settler of Mississippi. Mary Hamilton gives a first person account (in incredible detail) about her life from the 1860s ish to the 1930 ish. Made me so tired just listening to all the things she got done in an average day - such a hard life!!! And this was just in order to eat and have a place to sleep etc. In other words, just what it took to get by, no luxuries. She had an unbelievable memory too. Such detail. Lots of sadness here, btw but overall, a story of family and hope. Felt so bad for the woman that was thrown into the “bullpen”. Lort, nobody deserved that, I don’t care what kind of troublemaker she was! I listened to this on audio, and the narration was something else, highly recommend. Please note, this was another time, people had very different ideas about races. We as a nation have come a long way in the past 100 years, thanks be to God.

I found this very disjointed, and I agree with another reviewer who pointed out that there's no way this woman remembered all these conversations decades later (and the book is heavy on dialog). Maybe that contributed to the disjointed feel. Made it hard to get absorbed in the story.
This is one of the best books I’ve read in a long time. I absolutely love history and it was so lovely reading about Mary Mann Hamilton’s life story. Her bravery and tenacity of being able to survive the death of several of her children, countless moves, and finally the death of her husband Frank amazes me!

This is a book about a family and the struggles they face. They worked so hard and had one set back after another. Sad but also inspiring.
This was faced paced and also slightly boring at the same time. A lot of babies and children die, but the history of the pioneers was enough context to keep it relevant... I think?
