I loved this book!
I finished it so quick because the storyline and relationship between Lenore and Solon is so good! There’s spice, heartache, suspense, and romance.
Highly recommend ❤️

Just a bad rendition of FBAA. Girl gets kidnapped, girl starts to get Stockholm Syndrome, girl falls in love with her kidnapper, she gets kidnapped again, then comes into immense power she never knew she had.
The MC is also wildly naive. She's pretty annoying because of it. Her own dialogue is bad. And everything is so descriptive; like black studded Alexander McQueen bag is described as a black studded Alexander McQueen bag multiple times. We get it. It's a bag.
The spice was also pretty bad. Like a lot of synonyms for what things actually are. Just write it out. This isn't anyone's first rodeo.

DNF at 32%. I love vampires but I'm bored. The writing is cheesy. It also has too many homages to Twilight that weren't super well done--so much so I couldn't tell if it was an homage to Twilight or just sloppy. I liked some of the imagery but that's about it.

Given that my generation were the ones running around with the Team Jacob shirts and using Christina Perri's A Thousand Years as their first dance song at their wedding, I really feel I missed the vampire/werewolf/paranormal romance bandwagon until now.
As someone who has in the past (wrongly) believed paranormal romances to be corny, I was pleasantly surprised with Black Sunshine. When scrolling through my GR feed, I was recommended [b:Nightwolf|57661722|Nightwolf|Karina Halle|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1634523349l/57661722._SX50_.jpg|90317435] given I love to binge books based on the friends-to-lovers trope. Upon reading the summary for the book, I was informed the book could be read as a standalone, but if you intended to fall in love with any of the characters it was really better if you read the two-book series Nightwolf is a spin off of. Thus, I exhausted a HUGE sigh and told myself I would be starting another series, even though I'm deep in about 10 different ones right now. So, needless to say, my TBR list isn't happy with me right now...
What I liked about this book:
1. Characters:
Absolon, Absolon. You dark, brooding, alpha. Oh how I love you, your protectiveness, and your stubbornness. You are delicious and you can go full beast mode on me anytime
Wolf and Amethyst, I am glad I started with Black Sunshine, because you two are going to glow up hard! Wolf is a closet sweetie (MARK MY WORDS!!!) and Amethyst is literally the greatest human being on the planet.
Lenore, you are very interesting and I really want to see all your sides come together for you to be the badass I know you will be. But on the other hand, so far you are such a Mary Sue that I can't bring myself to love you just yet. BUT I really, really like you. Does that count for something?!?
2. I really enjoyed the dark elements in this book and those that have been set up for the sequel. It's edgy rather than creepy, and that's just my jam!
3. The writing is great and the pace of the chapters kept me turning page after page.
4. I felt like the ending was definitely setting the stage for the sequel, but the reader isn't left on a cliffhanger, which I greatly appreciate.
5. As a California native by the bay area, I love the setting being San Francisco! It made the read even more enjoyable for me as someone who knew exactly where the writer was talking about.
What could have been better:
1. I could handle a little bit more lore and understanding behind witches vs. vampires. I felt like them being vampires really was a backdrop issue at times and I honestly even forgot these weren't just people sometimes. If I'm going in, I want all in.
2. Ummmm Wolf + Lenore?? I still don't understand why Absolon didn't "step up" if we all knew how this was going to end anyways....
4 Shining Stars!
