3.5 stars. I didn’t love it. The author spent a lot of time telling us how the characters behaved rather than showing us. It was annoying and I couldn’t shake it. Story was okay. It wrapped up super neat with a bow on top.

There’s something alluring about this book that caught my attention from page one. Mercury is a character driven family saga weaving snippets from the past and present into the expertly woven story of the Joseph family.
It starts off closer to present day with a mystery corpse found in the attic of the town’s church. The story quickly changes direction as the reader is thrust back in time to how the Joseph family began before finally returning to the mysterious corpse and it’s unexpected demise.
Marley arrives in Mercury along with her mother, Ruth, and immediately is introduced to Elise Joseph, her husband and their sons. The complicated relationships between all members of the Joseph family suddenly emerge. Along the way, family secrets are unraveled and each member of the Joseph family struggles with the family obligations they are destined for and the deep longing to pave their individual paths.
It was hard not to warm up to each character despite their flaws. I enjoyed every character and the message they each told.
Thank you to NetGalley, Celadon Books and the author, Amy Jo Burns.

Read if you like
- character-driven
- realistic marriage stories
- small town/family business
- cycle breaking
I can’t tell you how invested I became in the Joseph family over the course of this book. Mercury feels like a story that’s passed down from generation to generation with just enough plot to grab your attention and a heavy focus on the captivating family dynamics.
It tracks main character, Marley, as she moves into a town called Mercury and becomes quickly caught up with the Josephs, mainly the three boys, Baylor, Waylon, and Shay. A lot of the book deals with Marley’s personal struggles as she finds her place among the Joseph family, with a heavy focus around her mother-in-law, a protective matriarch over the family, intent on doing everything by herself. The writing in this book is absolutely stunning, and I had several quotes that I highlighted or wrote down over the course of the novel.
Somehow amongst all of the trials the family faces, there is a GORGEOUS love story that is realistic and raw and shows the hard truths of marriage and parenting.
