⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 for this family drama. It begins with young Elise and her fresh-from-Vietnam husband, Mick, moving to a small western Pennsylvania town. The book, though, begins with Elise and Mick’s sons, Baylor and Waylon, catching the eye of new Mercury resident Marley. As Marley becomes entangled in the lives of the Josephs, she learns their secrets, sees their faults, and learns their truths. And when a secret she was hiding for Elise comes to light after Elise’s death, it may just do them all in. The end really did it for me, as the storylines wrapped beautifully and also messily. Worthy of a book club conversation.

This book, in my opinion, is highly underrated. I think maybe because it’s “slow” or not all that much happens in the traditional sense. But the writing is phenomenal, and the glimpse into human nature and the highs and lows of raw human relationships is so perfect that I think this book deserves far more praise! Beautiful.

I really enjoyed this family drama from Amy Jo Burns. I liked how she presented the story from all the major characters viewpoints - it really added to the understanding of each character. It was very well written with strong characters. I definitely look forward to reading more by the author.
