Mercury is a beautifully written family saga that follows the members of the Joseph family in the small town of Mercury, Pennsylvania... At least that's what the synopsis leads you to believe. In reality, this beautifully written novel is about two fiercely protective women and the sacrifices they make in the name of family.
I was blown away by the complexity of this novel and just how beautiful the words on the page were. Amy Jo Burns is a beautiful writer and she captured the individual qualities of each character so well that it was impossible not to love, and hate, each of them.
This is a story about people who want to make an impression on the world and work every day to do that in the only ways they know how. It's a story about love and sacrifice. A story that personifies the human experience of balancing your own wants and needs with the needs and wants of others. And it's about loyalty.

Really enjoyed this book. Just a great character driven, family novel.
I love a slow burn family drama with a bit of mystery tied in. It you like books like Little Fires Everywhere and Ask Again, Yes, this would be for you.

I love reading family dramas like this book. The characters were richly developed, as was the setting. There is some jumping around in the timeline that confused me a couple times. Also, the reveal of the mystery at the end was a tad unbelievable so I couldn’t quite give it 5 stars. But don’t let that dissuade you from reading it! This book gave me a lot to think about in terms of love, marriage, family, siblings, in-laws, small business ownership, and small towns to name a few. This would make a great book club discussion!

This debut novel from Amy Jo Burns is a family saga that is centered around the Joseph brothers who are all different, yet their bonds are unbreakable.
Strong on character development, the complex , complicated relationships are beautifully written.
They each play a role in the family: Baylor, the first born, is the strong one. Waylon, the middle brother, is the responsible one , and Shay is the baby of the family. But the dynamics of the family changed when Marley came to town. Although she tried to get in the matriarch of the family’s good graces, she never felt that Elise loved her.
The book contains a few interesting themes, such as perceived society roles and identity crises.
All in all, I loved this book, and I definitely recommend it to anyone who loves a well built story with complicated family dynamics.

“Shay wondered whether one person could cause an illness in another. If that was how life passed by, trading wounds through handshakes and family dinners and
regret.”
Mercury goes into the depths of a dysfunctional family in a small town in the 1990s. With the discovery of a body at the beginning, this character-driven book sucked me in, as the family seemed to know more about the body than they were letting on. Overall I liked it and enjoyed Amy Jo Burns writing. It made me angry and sad and entertained. I think it could have been a little shorter but I was satisfied by the ending and the different perspectives presented by the author.

Marley rides into town with her mother, another town in a series of moves. What she craves is stability; what she gets is the Joseph brothers. She loves them all, but she breaks one’s heart, marries one, and mothers the third. How this family grows together, apart, and back together was a wonderful story.
