I was really excited to read this one after enjoying Shiner a couple summers ago. Sadly, this one was a big miss for me. I really believe this book has the bones and ideas to be incredible, but it never quite achieves the level of depth it needs to truly unpack the complexities of these characters and this family.

This story explores identity, family dynamics, belonging, and motherhood as it follows the Joseph family, roofers in a small Pennsylvania town. The role of women is also particularly interesting in this story. The timeline begins in the present, jumps to the past, and eventually comes back to the present. While understanding past events is crucial to understanding these characters, I feel like alternating narrators may have better helped the reader understand/ connect with the characters. We get a little of this towards the end of the story, but it would have had a much bigger impact had it been woven throughout the entire book. I also feel like there are too many issues just “thrown in,” and none of them are ever developed or resolved.

Honestly, this one was a struggle for me to get through because it never picked up the way I was anticipating. I didn’t connect with the characters or feel like they made adequate growth. I also feel like there wasn’t enough closure with some of the major story events.

I know many people have really enjoyed this one. If you’ve read it, I’d love to hear your thoughts!
