Mercury

The magic of reading is when you pick up a book not having any expectations and it just blows you out of the water. “Go As A River” by Shelley Read was that book for me last year, and Mercury gets that title for me this year.

Mercury is a dysfunctional family drama set in a small town in the 1900s. Teenage Marley moves the town of Mercury, with her mother Ruth. Marley right away becomes involved with Baylor Joseph, which gets her a seat at the Joseph family table for dinner each night, with dysfunctional parents Mick and Elise and three brothers.

As the story progresses, we learn of the many secrets the Joseph family is hiding and are captivated by the intense family dysfunction and generational trauma, hid behind closed doors

"Show me your worst thing. I promise I won't look away."

I'm not quite sure what I expected going into this book, but what I got was one of the most emotionally unexpected journies with a group of characters that burrowed into my heart.

" ...being part of something meant becoming part of its mess, too."

The story follows a decade with a family in a small town. There are some really interesting twists, secrets, and a mystery that made it hard to put this book down.

"Sometimes a secret was all a woman had to call her own."

There were quite a few moments in this book that I had my heart pounding and tears in my eyes.

3.5 ⭐️ took a bit to get into and at times was hard to follow but I was hooked by the untangling of family dynamics and events. characters felt a little flat until they came to life in the second half of the book as you see them at multiple points in their lives. didn't want to finish the last chapter so I could hope for my own happy ending.
