Wow...great book! Very well written and obviously, very well researched. My fingers are itching now to get a hold of the next books in this series.
A little slow all the way through, but if you can stomach the tedium, the book will surprise you. A different look at the beginning of Robin Hood and how he met Little John, Friar Tuck and Marian and began his quest to steal from the rich.
I found myself having only a mild interest in this story pretty much the entire way through. I will continue the series, but I was not as taken with the storyline and characters as I would've liked. So I won't be reading the next book immediately.
I didn't like this at first, but the further I got into it, the more and more enthralled I became. I like the retelling of Robin Hood in a new place with a believable, in process protagonist.
I'm not going to finish this trilogy as it took me forever just to get into the first one. The story overall was interesting but it just seemed to take forever to get it going.
This is one of the best Robin Hood adaptations ever written. Stephen R. Lawhead is a master at taking centuries old legends and giving them fresh, original spins.
It's been a generation since William the Conqueror and his Norman soldiers invaded England. His barons seek to divide the country between them. One has launched an invasion into Wales, the last free British region, slaughtering the ruler of the Welsh kingdom of Elfael and enslaving its people. It's up to Bran, heir to the throne, to set things right.
One problem. Bran is a rogue with no interest in the throne or his people. It will take a life-threatening injury and the wisdom of the Last Bard of Britain to set him on the right path. Only then can he lead his faithful followers from their stronghold in the dark forest of Coed Cadw. Only then can he take the fight to the Norman oppressors. Only then can he assume the identity of one of the greatest legends of our time: Rhi Bran y Hud, or Robin Hood.
Lawhead's books transport readers to different times and different places, bringing dusty old myths and stories to new life. His take on the Robin Hood legend introduces readers to a new cast of old characters. All the favorites are there: Little John, Maid Marian, and Friar Tuck. But they've been given new identities. The plot is rich and exciting, mixing the roguish thievery fans of the legend have come to love with a deadly guerilla campaign against a vicious opponent. Add in a hefty dose of political intrigue and a little romance, and this is a novel to satisfy the most rabid Robin Hood enthusiast.
