It was ok. Love the old school cartoon drawing style but the story itself was a bit boring at times.
A necessary read if you're into old non-superhero cartoons and The New Yorker.

What an artist! Now that I live in China and have developed an appreciation for calligraphy and ink markings on paper and silk, I find Seth transcendental. Canada has many amazing writers, like Margaret Atwood, Alice Munro and Mavis Gallant, and Seth is on their level.
Uniquely Canadian, with an interesting concept buried in nostalgia
This semi-autobiographical graphic novel is about Seth, a Canadian cartoonist who becomes obsessed with a rarely published cartoonist called Kalo, whose art he discovers one day in an old copy of the New Yorker.
I wasn’t a huge fan of this book. Although it had some nice self-reflective moments, quite often it tipped over into pretentiousness. For example, at one point Seth is walking down a street, thinking about how ‘phony’ everyone else is and how ‘different’ and ‘complex’ he is in comparison. Ugh.

While there wasn't much to the story, I found my self strangely really enjoying this.
I should preface my review by saying that I think I am the wrong audience for this graphic novel.
In my first attempt at a mature graphic novel, I was somewhat bored. The "deep" points of this book are the same as those of The Cather in the Rye, a far superior work. Both stories follow a man against the world, angered by the general direction of society. In The Catcher in the Rye, Holden's youth makes his takes wistful and Salinger's delivery allows the reading to be deep without being obviously philosophic in its delivery. In It's a Good Life, If You Don't Weaken Seth's ponderings fall short and often feel like an attempt at being profound but the profundity is repackaged sentiments from much of the modernist school of thought (think T.S. Elliot). The plot of the story is so niche that, in combination with Seth's philosophic thoughts, the depth he could get at instead feels forced and awkward.
Overall, It's a Good Life, If You Don't Weaken has beautiful artwork alongside a rather boring story. Perhaps my problem is that I thought Seth's search for an obscure cartoonist would read as a generalized quest that anyone could relate to and enjoy, but for me it was not.
