Spunky puppeteer confronts her childhood sweetheart (who she believes tried to kill her) while she tries to find the legacy her deceased mother hid in a small Maine island cottage. Taking hints from traditional Gothic romances, this is a somewhat unbelievable but fun tale.

‘He’d been a hero, and heroes were her weakness… Except this particular hero had once nearly killed her.’

Okay, I’ll admit it. I had a real hard time getting into this book. But I think perseverance is the key here, or at least it was for me. For some reason, I didn’t have an instant connection to Annie and Theo, unlike most of the characters Ms. Phillips has previously created. I guess I wasn’t expecting the dark, almost gothic, tone of the story.

I really like SEP's quirky, complex characters, and it has been so long since I've read one of her novels that I was able to enjoy this story with a clean palate. The pace was satisfying, the conflict was interesting, and the dialogue was just as entertaining as all of her other books. Exactly the type of mindless romance that I wanted for an afternoon cozied under the blankets on my couch.

Good story with several shocking plot twists! The only thing I have to complain about is the puppet voices that kept talking to Annie throughout the book. Creepy! I almost did not read this book because of it. I'm glad I chose to read it. I love what Annie ultimately decided to do with her talent as a ventriloquist. Very inspiring! I'm also a little in love with Theo, who turned out to be one of those plot twists I mentioned earlier. Livia is so adorable. There's too much going on in this story to write a short paragraph about the events on the island, so you'll have to read it yourself. It's a very complete story with a weird beginning (due to the puppet conversations) that just kept getting better as I read further into the story. Any questions you have while reading are answered by the end. This is one of those books that you feel satisfied with by the time it's over. You just "sigh" because all is right in the world again.

Received a copy in exchange for an honest review.

A fun light read. Not a lot of surprises, but the puppets and ventriloquism did add an enjoyable element.

An entertaining read.

Not gonna lie, I kind of felt tricked into reading this, but I think its just because I didn't pay close enough attention to the summary. It makes fun of romance tropes, but then follows a few ("curing" the tortured male lead through the power of a woman's love). There were a couple funny parts, and the male lead was so dark and tortured it was funny! All in all, an amusing read of a genre I don't usually delve into.

Truthfully, it's probably my fault for reading a "romance." I did read it quickly, but was not into the puppet angle and skipped much of that dialogue.

Not an a amazing book, but fun. Good mystery and intrigue without taking itself too seriously.

It took me a while to get into Heroes Are My Weakness. It isn't the usual Susan Elizabeth Philips novel and yet that isn't a bad thing. It wasn't the light and frothy book I usually associate with her. It was a little darker with moments of lightness.

I recommend this book highly.
