I think this book was supposed to make me not want to grad school- but it did make me want to go to grad school
Deeply intimate, painful, riveting. A rumination in what it means to exist as / navigate our physical beings, and how often unchangeable circumstances can so thoroughly shape the places we occupy in the world. What does it mean to know someone? Are we all inherently unknowable? Or do the places we occupy inevitably cause the truths of our existences to rise to the surface?
The protagonist’s situation is so similar to Brandon Taylor’s biography that he reads like a stand-in for the author himself. Because of this, the sex scenes with the white guy feel like a weird sexual fantasy. Like, Brandon Taylor basically wrote a novel where the whole plot is that this straight white guy is obsessed with him. And he describes himself bottoming for him in vivid detail. It’s embarrassing to read.
first book i've read in a long time that i physically couldn't tear myself away from!!! brandon taylor you are REAL good
There are some great parts in this book and it touches on a lot of important themes, but it is so overwritten that it gets annoying at some points.
