Shirley is the many layered, somewhat meandering sophomore novel by Charlotte Brontë. I especially enjoyed its political angle with a plot line following a mill owner planning to introduce labour saving machinery to his mill and the resistance from his workers who stood to lose their livelihoods. The issue of the moral and ethical obligations of an employer, the way to balance the need to make a profit against the rights and needs of the workforce is not one that has gone away. I also enjoyed the contrasting personalities of Caroline and Shirley and what their different circumstances said about the constrained position of women in society at the time. In many ways it was a feminist novel. It’s a lengthy book and there were definitely chapters where not a lot happened but I was happy to immerse myself in the book and overall enjoyed my experience with it.
