This book had all the gravity that a dying planet should have. I could not stop reading.
Maybe my mindset is a little dark these days but I found it refreshing that the end of the world came through alien intervention and not at human hands (as we seem to be on track for now.) I also found it deeply refreshing that there was no deus ex machina to save the day... They were fucked, *knew they were fucked, and died. The end.
Wow.

Some interesting concepts - like that of God's judgement, though I find it hard to believe an American president would just accept destruction, when you may as well go down fighting. Also, the idea of the Earth as an organism in competition with other planets for domination over the universe was interesting. Generally though, the story plodded at times and it wasn't very satisfying. Hopefully the themes I just mentioned are developed further in the sequel.
I fear I am simply not the intended audience for this book. While I recognize the author's intelligence, curiosity, and impressive research, I found it oddly slow moving and emotionally distanced. Perhaps if I had more of a scientific mind I would have been more engaged. I do recommend it for sci-fi fans, and particularly those interested in Fermi's Paradox - the apparent contradiction between the lack of evidence and high probability estimates for the existence of extraterrestrial civilizations - for which this novel offers a possibly solution.

Writing style isn't amazing, and I was tempted to stop several times while reading it because it felt rambling and wandering with no real end in sight. The last 10% was pretty good though, and felt like a good ending...I'm scared to read the next in the series because of that.
