This book was a little slow to draw me in, but once it did, what I loved most about it was the questions it raised in me: if we all knew the world was going to end soon, would we just end it all on our own? what lengths would you go to protect the one good thing in your life, and can you truly be a good person while doing it? can you stay a good person while living in self-defense mode? is it the lasting power of our works and goals that make them worth it, or do they hold value regardless of their impact and longevity? this book really makes you think and reflect on life in a unique way.

I really enjoyed the frame of this novel being that the end of the world was an inevitability and that what we are left with is seeing how people will deal with it, but ultimately it felt a little too narrowly-focused to be super effective for me. I think maybe showing a little bit more of the outside world, perhaps through the lens of David, rather than being so confined to Lyd and Mott's lives, we might feel the overall danger imposed on the two throughout. Instead, there are often long stretches of not much going on other than internal and personal conflict between mother and daughter. I will say, the book really sticks the landing and ties up how important being so narrow throughout was, because we can see a very personal experience with this whole thing in a way that we wouldn't had it been too broad.

This reminded me of the strange and wicked desperation of the series The Leftovers crossed with the quirky brilliance of character that Wes Anderson brings to each of his films. Needless to say, I loved this odd, dreamy and unsettling story about a mother and daughter and the impending end of the world. Very original and left me with a swollen heart and a tear choked throat. A great read for conspiracy theorists and fanatics of apocalyptic tales.

This was such a strange book with a completely original take on the end of the world story. The dialogue felt overly weird and out of place at times but it was also dream like and anxiety provoking in the best away. The ending was haunting and totally unexpected. Not for everyone but definitely for me.
