BRILLIANT. The writing was poetic, the story moving and timeless.

This is one of those books that I had to read for school. None of the setting was explained to the class. It was just "Here, read this and do these assignments." To be fair, my teacher that year was just terrible. Just... just goddamned awful, honestly. In the end, I found it tedious and boring. Now that I know a bit more about South Africa, I could probably go back and reread this and get a bit more out of it. But I think it's honestly just been ruined for me. I don't know. I might still try. I've forced myself through some pretty terrible books for worse reasons.

Did not finish. Did not like.

This is an important book. It was written during apartheid in South Africa but the messages echo across cultures and times. Warning; this is not an easy book to read but it is worth every word!

A WRM book. I loved it. I wasn’t looking forward to it having just finished The Father’s Tale but I was hooked after page one. It is not a book I ever would have picked up to read but I am very glad I read it. It’s an example of what compassion, mercy and forgiveness can do in this world.
