I love the writing style of this book-it's beautifully tragic description of life under apartheid in South Africa is incredibly poignant. This book resurrected a passion for the social justice I believe in, reminding me how unfair the world can be. Though I cried through most of it, I would recommend it whole heartedly...Alan Paton's book is a must-read for anyone who is human.

Glad Apartheid is over. This book introduced me to South Africa when I was in high school. The book just stayed with me.

Powerful, beautiful, poignant, profound.

I don't know how I've missed reading this before now, but it is one of the best books I have ever read. Heart wrenching and beautiful.

I don’t have the theological or literary chops to adequately analyze Alan Paton’s bittersweet love song to his beloved South Africa. It is lyrical, sensory and evocative.

A touching (and, in some ways, timeless) story about class, race, poverty, crime, and faith.
