Having grown up in rural KwaZulu Natal I found it relatable and relevant, even though I was born 45 years after its publishing. It is a moving story and one I am sorry it took me so long to get around to reading.
It took a little effort to get into this book, but wow, what a powerful ending. I'm sad it's over.
I was supposed to read this in high school and didn't, so now that I've read it maybe it can be taken off my permanent record.

One of the best books I've read lately. I thought it was a beautifully written and challenging story.
sad
tense
medium-paced
The audio book narration is excellent. The story is touching. The writing is beautiful.
What I learned from this book:
Nothing in life is so big that it cannot be overcome.

I couldn't put this book down. And when I had to, I couldn't stop thinking about the characters. The struggles of South Africa were fully on display, and the prose brought out a lot of emotions, especially sympathy.
Beautifully—almost poetically—written book about prejudice, poverty, injustice, betrayal, heartbreak, and main character Kumalo’s deep-seated love for his fellow men that remains constant in the face of it all. A quotable story that will wring your heart. A top-pick & must-read.
