A very moving and well-written book. Some parts were a bit didactic, but most were very nuanced looks at complex moral questions. I especially liked the sections in which Paton zooms out from his central characters to give us a picture of public opinion and the milieu in which the story is set.

pacifist slop which does not even try to hide its love for the very systems of dependency which perpetuate settler colonialism.

Beautiful. Also relevant. There are things about 1948 South Africa that ring true here, today. So much fear. This is a sad book, for sure, but also lovely.
