This book is an absolutely excellent piece of writing. The plot is masterfully handled and the prose is very high quality. The last paragraph was deeply and unpleasantly uncomfortable in a way that I didn't feel particularly contributed to the suspense; there are several moments where the story is uncomfortably and unnecessarily preoccupied with the sexualised and maternalised female body of the narrator's wife. Whilst this may be seen as feeding into the sense of suspense and discomfort that the book aims to create, I personally found it tasteless and unnecessary. There are also a few threads of the story that seem to fray at the edges, although this again may be effective for some readers. For a book outside of my usual remit, I thought the story was otherwise strong; I was particularly fascinated by the Old Justice storyline.
