The first half of the book was incredibly slow, and the most interesting parts were glossed over in just a few pages. The concept was good, but the execution was poor, and it finished very abruptly and unsatisfyingly.

This style of horror is certainly not for everyone. It is a slow burn and cerebral, with the main character’s POV not necessarily reliable as the story progresses. Parts of it are ambiguous or intentionally vague, so that the reader must draw their own conclusions and fill in the blanks in the story. I love that, but I know it’s not everyone’s thing.
I liked this even more than Andrew Michael Hurley’s other novels, which are all excellent. It is a simple English folk-horror type tale with beautiful prose and moved at a quicker pace than The Loney or Devil’s Day. I read it in one sitting because I could not put it down! Can’t wait to see the upcoming film adaptation with Matt Smith.

This was a perfectly crafted folk horror. The story unfolded at an almost perfect rate which left me anxious and in places made my skin crawl. My only issue actually is that I wanted more! I read a review that said this book would make an excellent A24 movie and I can only agree. Would love to see an adaptation of this, I imagine it would terrifying.

Dang yeah this book was spooky. Plus I love books about evil children, so this was right up my alley. I’m very excited to see the movie based on this book when it comes out. But one thing I did not like about this book was that I think he should have done more with the tree in the field, because that was a really cool concept.
I also wish there would have been more of a death scene for Ewan.

Read from the Provo library.
