Farewell Floppy is about a young boy who believes he is too big to have a rabbit as a best friend and decides to let him go into the forest. While strolling into the deep dark forest, they notice a young girl walking her dog through the forest. Wondering if the little girl is doing the same with her dog and freeing him as well, the boy decides to tie his rabbit to a tree using a string from one of his unraveling sweaters. After saying goodbye, the boy decides to have second guesses and thinks it might be better to untie him so he can be a wild rabbit and run free. He goes back only to discover Floppy is missing! Frantically, he begins searching for him and comes upon a house in the woods. Inside, he discovers the little girl, her dog and Floppy all having tea together at the table. The little girl invites him to tea (which was water) and tells the boy how she rescued the rabbit (who is actually a lop bunny) and talks about how the cabin is a refuge for lost animals and asks if the boy wants to help him search for missing animals the next day. The boy agrees and takes Floppy back home with him looking forward to hanging with his new companion tomorrow.

I think people are being too hard on the kid in this book. He tries to be hard-hearted, but fails. For whatever reason (Parental nudging? classmates teasing?) he wants to be more grown up and have "normal" friends. But he's not able to leave his rabbit (definitely alive, BTW, unless he's making up /imagining about Floppy chewing wires) as planned. He does eventually meet a potential friend, and even though there's a dorky factor with her, he decides to give it a try, which I think is even more promising than a hip, "normal" friend might have been. And Floppy is included.

What do you do with a best pal pet you think you have outgrown? Here, the narrator takes his pet bunny into the woods so that Floppy can live out his days in the wild, but when his plan appears to have succeeded, the boy realizes how much he still cares for his bunny. Will he be able to find him in the woods? This is an OK book, but abandoning his rabbit in the woods bothered me, and while things may have worked out in the end, I couldn't help but think about all those kids who have serious abandonment issues where things haven't worked out.
