This is the fourth book in Baum’s “Wizard of Oz” series of fantastical children’s adventure books.
We’re not in Kansas anymore! The book starts with Dorothy visiting California with Uncle Henry, when an earthquake opens a passage to another land. Dorothy, her kitten Eureka (Toto is nowhere to be found in this book), and her new friend Zeb fall through the crack along with the horse Jim and the buggy, eventually alighting in the Land of the Mangaboos (a people who grow like vegetables). There they meet up with the Wizard of Oz (whose balloon has again run away with him), and begin numerous adventures in their quest to get back to earth’s surface.
The series are enjoyable children’s books that have remained popular over generations, and are now in their second century.

The fourth installment of the Wizard of Oz series. I enjoyed this one as much as the last one. The fact that Baum can keep coming up with more adventures for Dorothy and new characters that somehow fit into this wonderful world and these different lands, is almost as creative and interesting as sci-fi writers creating dimensions.
There’s still a lot left in the series so we’ll see how far I can get this year.

Not one of the better ones. It ret-cons the history of Oz established only two books ago. The illustrations are lovely, however I don't understand why the artist chose to put the kitten Eureka in clothes when the text never once mentions her wearing any.

And thus begins my most hated portion of the Oz books: The Deus Ex Belt endings. At the conclusion of the third Oz book, Ozma obtained a magic belt that would grant her any wish she desired. Now, just when things begin to get tense and Dorothy seems in danger, Ozma wishes her away to safety. It just invalidates the entire danger of the adventure and all of Dorothy's cleverness and that's all I have to say.
