Not exactly a review but still. The ending was just so- I can't even. Somebody shoot me now. orz.

I hate this book. I hate it, hate it, hate it. It was like a modern-day HadesxPersephone fanfic, but with some twists on it. I feel like it was trying to be like [b:Unraveling|12157365|Unraveling (Unraveling, #1)|Elizabeth Norris|http://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1337474732s/12157365.jpg|17128227], when
Spoilerthe girl finally gets the guy to admit he loves her, only to be torn apart by a freak of nature
. That part at the end made me honestly want to puke. I'm honestly more of a ColexNikki, than a JackxNikki, so

If I ever read another book like this again, it will be TOO SOON.

I debated on whether or not to read this book. I finally decided that I would give it a chance & let me say I am glad I did. I found this book thoroughly enjoying from the characters Becks, Jack, & Cole to the retelling of Greek myths. I had to keep reading (hardly putting it down) so I could find out how it ended. I wish the second book was published already so I could continue reading. Job well done!

So after reading all the reviews on this one I was completely unsure what to expect. Yep, I expected the protagonist to be beautiful and well sought after with a special gift of some kind. Yep, I expected the love triangle. Yep, I expected Jack would be the amazing prince charming and I even expected the jealous best friend.

I loved the premise of the novel; but I was unsure of how it could be pulled off, expecting some lame attempt at a paranormal/young-adult hybrid that is all the rage at the moment.

I certainly did not expect to love it as much as I did.

It is such an emotionally driven novel with Ashton's skill bringing about a haunting story full of beautifully fleshed out characters. I loved the world, I loved the characters, I loved the flashbacks between past and present. Honestly, this is a fantastic book and I would recommend it wholeheartedly!

Absolutely 5 of 5 stars!!!

A novel about eternal love, heart breaking decisions and the message about the power to find ourselves into the darkness. That's what Brodi Ashton gives with "Everneath".

Niki had chosen the easy way to settle her feelings of reject and pain and thus she ended on a version of Underworld where she became a "battery" for Cole an immortal. Only her thoughts of Jack kept her almost alive. And after her Return back on the Surface she'll have to deal with the pain of the ones she left behind.

I liked the descriptions and the passings from past to present. Even the ending in all its teary state was beautifully written. I hope to find out more about Everneath on the second book! A great read! Don't miss it. :)

When I first began Everneath, I was confused and disappointed. I knew this was a retelling of Hades and Persephone myth, but I was so lost. I felt like I was thrown into the middle of someone’s story. I even looked up whether it was the first book or not. Fortunately, he feeling went away as I kept reading, determined to remain optimistic and open minded about where the book would lead me. After finishing, I realize just how much I enjoyed the book and how the style of the storytelling captivated me and kept me interested.

What happened to Nikki Beckett? All I knew was that she disappeared. She was gone for awhile. She was being fed off of in the Everneath for a hundred years. And now she Returned the the Surface. She had six months before the Tunnels claimed her. She wanted to say goodbye in the right ways. She never forgot Jack. And Cole, the Everliving who Fed off her for those hundred years was captivated by her, shocked by her ability to remember the Surface, and offered her the chance to come with him, avoid the Tunnels, and be an Everliving.

I think the most interested part, after I got over the initial frustration, was not knowing what was happening. I was thrust into a story where Nikki returned, but where did she go? What happened? The chapters went back to her time before leaving for the Feed and then continued on during her 6 months left on the surface. I liked the flashbacks because it gave me details about her and her story. Everneath avoided some traditional YA tropes by being told in such a unique way. If I had her “before” story first, I may have thought there was a love triangle, but I knew it was not really like that. Nikki wasn’t the special character who suddenly realized she was the key to everything and had the big reveal about the mythological setting. Instead, her knowledge and understanding of the Everneath was fairly limited. While she experienced an event in the Everneath and survived, that was really all she knew about. Her circumstance was unique and she was somewhat special, but in different ways than what I typically get from novels in this genre.

Nikki was kind of… sad. But for some reason, it didn’t bother me. I think the layout of the novel worked well for me because I would have felt less sympathy for Nikki had I gotten her story chronologically. She was devoid of emotion in the present because she had little capacity to feel. And the Tunnels and her fate was sort of hanging over her, which is bound to ruin anyone’s day. And before, she was dealing with her mom’s death. I may not really understand why she ever went to the Feed in the first place, but I can understand that everyone has their vulnerable moments. And Cole was pretty good at being persuasive.

Everneath was weird. The plot was unique, strange, and captivated. The layout of the story was different, but it kept my interest. I don’t know that it competes with other Greek mythology retellings in my opinion, but there is something about the story that I find compelling. I’ve bought the sequel, so I’m definitely going to continue the series. I’m curious to see where it goes.

Everneath is a loose reference to a few of the Hades & Underworld myths, including the story of Hades & Persephone and Orpheus with Eurydice. I've said before that I love almost any story that's based off Greek Mythology, and Everneath was no exception to the rule. Nikki has spent 100 years in the Everneath with Cole, fleeing to the bliss that only Cole can offer and running from her pain. Cole is an immortal who lives off the emotions fed to him by sacrifices such as Nikki. When Nikki awakens from her 100 year slumber, she is different from others - she immediately chooses to return to the surface even though she can only do so for 6 months. Nikki is unique in that she retains a memory. It is Jack's name, and Jack's face that Nikki has clung to for her 100 years. Nikki struggles to spend her 6 months saying goodbye to the family and friends she loves before her time is up, while Cole is determined to make Nikki Queen of the Everneath. And Jack? Well, that's the real mystery.

Everneath's chapters alternate between the present and the past. In the past is spent filling in the gaps of just why Nikki gave up her life to the Everneath, and just what happened between her and Jack. The present reflects on Nikki struggling to regain the memories and emotions she has lost. For while it's been 100 years for her, it's been 6 months on the surface. Often enough as a reader, I found the present just as heartbreaking as the past - often times, more so as when Nikki disappeared, she did so without leaving a trace. Her friends and family have no idea where she has gone, and who's lives somewhat halt with her gone. Nikki herself is a fascinating character, because as a reader you read as Nikki literally feels emotions for the 'first time' again. While at first I actually thought Nikki was selfish, as her story evolves and fills in, I was completely 'on her side'.

It is really Jack though that made the story for me. Jack is a character that I expected to hate from the start - I knew he had to be responsible for Nikki giving up everything. The truth however, is never that simple. Jack is a character that is detailed well as the story progresses along, forcing you to continuously readjust your opinion of him. It is perhaps Jack that my heart really broke for throughout Everneath, and it becomes easy to see why Nikki refuses to forget Jack despite initially forgetting everything else about her life.

My one fault with Everneath, is that I wasn't sold on the 'evil'. Time in the present of the story is spent by Nikki counting down the days left until she is forced to return to the Everneath, and it is this 'bad' that I expected the story to rail against. When this didn't prove to be entirely true, I was a little confused. However regardless of this, I am extremely interested in the next book of the series. Everneath creates an extremely interesting universe with main characters that are written extremely well.

This was an interesting and highly original story. I can't wait for the next one!

People kept saying this book was the old Persephone myth with a twist. Well I'm here to tell you, it's not. There is no romance between "Hades and Persephone." Instead there's a terrible half romance between the boyfriend she left 6 months before. It. Was. Awful. What's his name? Nick didn't cut my romance radar. I firmly believed he was just a character filler for half the book. He was just there and being annoying.

I gave it 3 stars because I actually finished it in one sitting, but that's because I couldn't sleep. Incredibly disappointed.

DID NOT FINISH: 75%
