Review originally posted on The Book Addict's Guide: I downloaded the audiobook for EVERNEATH because I thought the concept sounded pretty interesting. I’ve been interested in mythology since I was young and I actually haven’t really read many books based in mythology yet so I was actually hoping of kind of a lot with this book. Sadly, I was kind of let down.

I felt like the story was really predictable and I think that was one of the main problems I had with the story line. Every time a situation was set up, for the most part I could see where it was going far before we got there. It did evolve into its own storyline but it was kind of a mix between its own story and a retelling… if that makes sense.

I really enjoyed the mythology side of if, but when it all came down to it, I just really didn’t care how it ended. I wasn’t pulled into the story and I didn’t feel like the author made me feel any connection with the characters. If it wasn’t an audiobook, I’m not sure I would have finished. I found myself just not caring what happened to them.

I think another reason I didn’t particularly care for it was that I didn’t end up liking any of the characters. Nikki seemed pretty dramatic and and yet flat all at the same time. I didn’t feel like she was becoming a real person for me and I never saw her as more than a character in a story. Jack Caputo wasn’t terribly intetersting to me either and I didn’t quite catch on to his appeal. He had a reputation of sleeping with quite a few girls before he started dating Nikki and that really turned me off to him. It never really seemed like he shed that reputation somehow. All of a sudden, it didn’t matter now that he was dating Nikki. I don’t know – I just didn’t see it. I guess Cole was the one dynamic character for me, but even still, he was just okay in my book.

AUDIOBOOK IMPRESSIONS

Narrator: Amy Rubinate // This was one of my least favorite narrators so far. Her voice was weirdly breathy and it kind of made everything seem extremely dramatic when it shouldn’t have been. I did like her voice differentiation though – I got a good feel of who the different characters were with different voices, so that was good. I just didn’t care for her narration overall, and as always, I think it affected my opinion of the book too.

The Everneath is pretty much another word for the Underworld, like in Greek mythology. After staying in there for 6 months of our time, 100 years of theirs, Nikki decides to come back. She wants to try to say the goodbyes she never could before to the people she cared about, before getting sucked into the Tunnels. Cole, who she was with that entire time, comes back with her, trying to convince her to be with him, that because she survived, she could be a queen, but at the cost of stealing the life from other people.

I loved the thought behind the story, the retelling of myths and Persephone. While I read quite a few reviews that said it was a slow start, it wasn’t really that bad for me actually, I understand that the author has to build up the story and the background of the characters. One thing I thought was nice was the little snippets of the past events that would show up between the current story, to help explain what happened before she went to the Everneath. Also the little counter for how much time of the 6 months was left helped me keep track, which was pretty cool.

Aside from that, for some reason I just had trouble connecting with the characters, until closer to the end of the book instead of the beginning. Though that’s not saying this book isn’t good! I really enjoyed reading it, it just wasn’t super amazing, but I’m sure other people will absolutely love it. I have a feeling the second book will be even better!

I recommend this for anyone wanting a young adult book with fantasy, romance and mythology.

whats to write about this book except that it was filled with awesomeness.
i loved the writing style. you could see Nikki's pain and Cole is just one bad ass dude . Jack is just the sweetest guy ever, not giving up on her and trying to get her back.
this book is a Greek mythology re-written .if you love Greek mythology i recommend this for you.
this book for me has everything..so hurry up with book two already i am dying of suspense.:)

I didnt live the entire book but I definately lived the ending. I wasnt at all surprised when it happened but the way it happened surprised me. Personally I dont like Jack and Nikki together. Im definately in love with Cole. I love him and when Nikki, Jack, and Will tried to kill him I was so done with it. I actually wanted Jack to wake up and realize that Jules was his soul mate. I ship them so hard! And why cant Nikki wake up and realize that she is bad for Jack!

This book was really good, I loved Nikki as a character. She was flawed and very relatable. Cole and Jack were both well written male characters and although love triangles have been done before this one still managed to not come off super predictable.

This book seemed like I'd really like it but I just think it was okay. The beginning was slow for me and it took awhile before I began to really enjoy it. The way it was set up (with her telling the story in the present and in the past) took me awhile to get used to. I wish that the characters had a little more depth and I wish that there would have been more description throughout the book. I totally did not like the ending at all.

I really wanted to like it. And I did! Just not ... "It's so awesome, read it or I'll take your family hostage"-awesome, if you know what I mean. I felt like I was watching/reading a play, where I knew exactly that the people on stage were acting and that's especially true for the side characters like Jules.

Cole behaves irrationally, and I never really got him either. I feel like there is a whole big chunk missing in the beginning. It starts when the Feed (I.D. where Cole sucks Nikki dry of emotions) ends and I had no idea what was even happening. That got better as the novel progressed, but sadly not enough as to understand what actually transpired. I mean, I know the gist of it. But the logistics? How it looked like in the Everneath? No idea, really. And that's the biggest short falling of this novel in my opinion because I need to know what happens in order to invest in the people, in order to root for them.

Generally, though, I liked the plot. I may be getting a bit tired of the Hades and Persephone myth (I have 5 books released in 2011 on my shelf that center around that myth), though. BUT finally a book where a girl is in love with a guy her age! Not some centuries-old supernatural creature! Well, that creature is there of course, and available! But so far, Nikki remains steadfast and with Jack.

Oh Jack. I think I may have fallen in love with him a little bit. He seems like such a sweetheart. A bit impulsive maybe, but definitely smitten with Nikki. In fact, it was a bit painful to read, especially for Jules. But still, they make a great couple even against all those odds. I think Ashton made Jack react wonderfully, to me he was the character that I believed the most. I kept looking forward to his appearances. Also, characters that are football players and nice are far too uncommon I think. I hardly think that EVERY football player on this earth is a jerk.

So after sleeping on the rating, I decided on three stars. Why? Mostly because I kept thinking about how when I finished this book I could start another. I didn't necessarily want to finish it, just for finding out what actually happens. I wanted to finish it to start another book. Obviously that's a bad sign. Still, it was a nice read.

ok go read this it is a really cool mix of greek AND egyptian mythology

Everneath is the first book in the start of a dramatic and compelling new YA series and was recommended to me by my sister and fellow blogger Chrissi Reads. I tend to trust whatever my sister recommends, after all she's one of the people who knows my biblio-tastes best, but I knew I had to read it fairly soon and that it had to be something special when she kept asking when I was going to start it! Our heroine in this series is teenager Nikki Beckett who one day seemed to disappear into thin air, leaving her family, friends and boyfriend behind to become part of the Everneath. This was a personal decision on Nikki's part as at the time she was struggling to cope with the death of her mother and was in a seemingly hopeless situation with her boyfriend, Jack. Her desperation to "stop feeling things," leads the mysterious Cole into tempting her to The Everneath (with an agenda of his own of course) and he promises Nikki the peace she desperately craves but is not granted from her tormented mind. You see although Cole is immortal, known as an Everling, he requires humans as "Forfeits," to feed off their emotions whilst replenishing his energy. His latest acquisition Nikki, is a particularly valuable prize when instead of forgetting who she is as par normal procedure she remembers everything and survives the so-called "feed."

The Everneath is a mystical, terrifying underworld and Nikki is forced to remain there for one hundred years as Cole's food-source before Cole returns her to the surface - unfortunately only for a period of six months so that she can say her goodbyes to her loved ones and prepare herself for returning to The Everneath permanently to be reclaimed by the horrifying Tunnels. Even though Nikki spent a century in The Everneath only six months have passed on Earth which is still a significant period of time to be AWOL and she has a lot of explaining to do. Nikki must re-gain her father's trust and try to build bridges with her boyfriend Jack who was understandably confused and hurt by her disappearance. She must also resist Cole who she has a unique bond with due to the whole feeding experience and almost like a dealer to a drug addict bothers her on a daily basis, attempting to make her submit to him and return to the underground as his Queen. Nikki understands that her return to The Everneath is compulsory and attempts to reconcile herself with her broken father and her boyfriend but becomes increasingly alarmed by the power that Cole holds over her and fears returning to the dreaded Tunnels where she will remain for eternity. If there is a choice to be made the other option being relinquishing herself to Cole, should she do this despite all her morals and misgivings? Or will true love shine through and give Nikki the opportunity to escape her fate?

Well, this story sure packs a punch. The novel is loosely based on the mythology of Persephone/Hades and Orpheus/Eurydice and as I studied Greek mythology for a while I was instantly attracted to the idea which is presented beautifully with a bit of a modern twist. Nikki is a strong and admirable female character who accepts that she made a terrible decision by agreeing to accompany Cole to The Everneath. Instead of being self-pitying about it she uses that final opportunity of life on Earth to try and re-connect with her father, recognising that he is suffering also. The author has created a fascinating idea of life after death and her description of the Tunnels sent a definite chill down my spine. In fact, from the moment I opened this book I found it very hard to put down and was instantly swept away into a world of darkness, grief and impossible situations. The imagination used to create all the threads of this story is enviable, the characterisation superb and I'm really very excited to get to the next book in the trilogy after an explosive ending.
