Set in a dystopian future where water scarcity grips New Zealand, Alice's childhood imaginary friend, Simp has returned. Her current life is unfulfilling and Alice is jaded as the world crumbles around her. So when she meets a handsome wealthugee from Hong Kong - Pablo, he could be the perfect man to take her mind off things and treat her to a good time.

I absolutely loved the character of Alice, the writing is incredible and she is totally believable whilst still being funny. The twists in the plot are great and really well executed. Just when you think things are weird enough, it just gets more bizarre, which I absolutely loved.

The narration is delivered with impeccable skill, enhancing the immersive experience. Overall, this book offers a captivating blend of imagination, suspense, humour and expert storytelling that will leave readers thoroughly entertained!

I did not care for the characters or the plot. It's not that the characters themselves were unlikeable (although some were), but there was no development or reason for why they behave in the way that they do. I did not care about them and did not want to see what happens to them. Their actions were not even in line with their character development thus far and it seemed like they were only behaving in that way to move the plot forward. Very exposition heavy and yet I learnt nothing substantial about the characters or the world. It was also very slow paced and I had no idea where this story was going because there was no plot or character development by the mid-point.

dnf at 16% (for now... might go back to it sometime) i've been reading this book on and off and it's taking me so long. these first few chapters do sound interesting but don't read like what i signed up for and it's making it hard for me to continue. though i can say i definitely would enjoy this in audiobook.
still, thank you so much for the copy!

The complete and unabridged audiobook of ‘She’s a Killer’ by Kirsten McDougall, narrated by Eva Seymour, will be released by Bolinda Audio on 28th Feb 2024.

And if Naomi Alderman’s [b:The Future|123681467|The Future|Naomi Alderman|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1699470465l/123681467._SY75_.jpg|100516893] was your kind of spiky Cli-Fi Dystopia, you should dash out and grab a copy of ‘She’s a Killer’.

Alice is a calamitous anti-hero, despising herself almost as much as she does everyone else in the world (except, maybe, for her prickly imaginary friend), in a novel that, if Mona Awad and Jenny Offill had offspring? This is that novel.

The nigh-apocalyptic backdrop forms the blast-zone for Alice's macabre sardonicism. And she is so ineffably quotable: 'He was looking at me like I was Russian Literature.' As quotable, as crafty, as tragic, and just as grisly as Lady Macbeth: 'He was made to be eaten by lions.'

Into the bargain, Eva Seymour's exceedingly good narration turns ‘She’s a Killer’ into a paced, documentary-style deadpan reportage, in what is essentially the ultimate disaster character study: choppy; sharply observed; searing in places.

Thanks to Bolinda Audio for another spectacularly good advance e-audiobook for review through NetGalley.
